Matomo in Switzerland
Alongside Germany, Switzerland is my most important market. I work for cantonal banks, insurers, clinics, startups, corporations and federal programmes, often together with Swiss agencies. Typical are multilingual websites, high data protection requirements and the wish to keep the data in-house.
Sound familiar?
- 01revFADP and GDPR at the same timeMany Swiss websites also address people in the EU, so the technology has to be able to cover both legal frameworks.
- 02Data not abroadAnalytics data should not sit with cloud services abroad, but in-house or with a host of your choice.
- 03Multilingual websitesGerman, French, Italian and English should be analysable separately and together.
- 04High requirements in banking and insuranceSecurity, documentation and clear responsibilities are part of the rollout.
- 05Public bodiesFederal and cantonal programmes need privacy-friendly measurement and traceable KPIs.
- 06Projects with agenciesThe agency builds the website, but often lacks specialists for Matomo and data protection.
Privacy-friendly under the revFADP and GDPR
Since 1 September 2023 the revised Federal Act on Data Protection has applied in Switzerland, and many websites also address visitors from the EU. Matomo can be configured to measure without cookies, without accessing device properties and with shortened IP addresses. I document the settings, the legal assessment stays with your legal advisers.
Data kept in-house
Matomo runs on your servers, in your data centre or with a Swiss hosting provider of your choice. There is no third party that sees the data, and you decide how long raw data is kept.
Measuring in several languages
German, French, Italian and English: I set up Matomo so that each language version can be analysed on its own and all of them together give an overall picture, with consistent goals and campaigns across all languages.
Banks, insurers and public bodies
For cantonal banks, insurers and federal programmes, security, permissions and documentation are part of the rollout. I harden the instance, set up roles and single sign-on and hand everything over with clear documentation.
Together with your agency
Many projects in Switzerland are created with agencies. The agency is responsible for the website and campaigns, I take care of Matomo, the tag manager and privacy settings, on the agency’s behalf or directly for you.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does the GDPR apply to Swiss websites?
That depends on whether a website also addresses people in the EU. The legal assessment is made by your legal advisers. Technically, Matomo can be configured to be very privacy-friendly, for example without cookies and with shortened IP addresses, so that the assessment rests on a clear basis.
Can the data stay in Switzerland?
Yes. Matomo runs on your own servers or with a hosting provider of your choice in Switzerland, without transfers to third parties.
How do you measure multilingual websites?
Depending on the setup, as one website with language as a custom dimension or as separate websites with a combined view. Both can be compared cleanly.
Do you work with our agency?
Gladly. Many of my projects in Switzerland run together with agencies, where I take on the Matomo and data protection part.
