Switching from GA4 to Matomo
Many companies want to take their web analytics out of the Google account without losing years of data and habits. I guide the switch from Google Analytics 4 to Matomo, from the measurement plan and the parallel run to importing historical data with the Google Analytics Importer.
How I work
- 01Capture the GA4 property, events and conversions
- 02Transfer the measurement plan to Matomo and implement it
- 03Parallel run and comparison of the numbers
- 04Import historical data, switch off GA4
Why a planned switch
GA4 and Matomo count differently: sessions, events, channels and conversions are defined differently. If you only swap the code, you end up comparing apples and oranges. That is why the switch starts with what you analyse in GA4 today and translates it into goals, events and reports in Matomo.
What is transferred
- Events and conversions become events and goals in Matomo
- Custom definitions become custom dimensions
- E-commerce products, cart and orders with revenue
- Channels and campaigns your own channel groups, utm parameters keep working
Bringing over historical data
With the Google Analytics Importer, your existing reports from Google Analytics come over to Matomo. Comparisons across years remain possible, even after GA4 is switched off. What is imported are finished reports, not individual visits. Segments on the old data are therefore not possible, the familiar overviews are.
Parallel run and switch-off
Both systems run side by side for a few weeks. I compare the key figures, explain differences and document them. Only when the numbers make sense is GA4 switched off and removed from the tag manager and the consent tool.
Result
Matomo measures what you used to analyse in GA4, with comparable numbers, the historical reports and a team that can read the new reports.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can we take our existing Google Analytics data with us?
Yes, with the Google Analytics Importer, a free plugin by Matomo. It brings over the reports from Google Analytics so that year-on-year comparisons remain possible. Individual visits and segments on the old data are not available.
How long should both systems run in parallel?
Usually a few weeks, until the numbers line up in a way you can follow. They will never be identical, because the two systems count differently. I document the differences.
Do we need a cookie banner again for Matomo?
That depends on the configuration and on the assessment of your data protection advisers. Matomo can be configured to measure without cookies and without accessing device properties.
What happens to Google Ads?
Conversions can still be reported to Google Ads, if you like server-side from Matomo and without a Google tag on the website.
