Intranet analytics with Matomo

Which news do employees read, what do they search for and not find, which areas hardly anyone uses? I have set up Matomo for intranets on SharePoint and Adobe Experience Manager, including at large corporations. Measurement works without personal reference and in-house.

How I work

  1. 01Agree goals with internal communications, IT and data protection
  2. 02Add tracking to SharePoint or AEM
  3. 03Analyse search, documents and areas
  4. 04Reports for editors and communications

How an intranet differs from a website

Visitors are signed in and work for the organisation. That is exactly why intranet analytics needs clear limits: it measures content and areas, not people. Add technical specifics such as single sign-on, many individual sites and documents opened outside the browser.

SharePoint and Adobe Experience Manager

  • SharePoint Online tracking through a SharePoint Framework extension that loads on every page, including news and hub sites
  • Adobe Experience Manager tracking through the page template or a client library, with area, page type and language as dimensions
  • Mixed landscapes several systems in one Matomo instance, analysable separately and together

What you can analyse

Which news gets read, which areas use the intranet, what is searched for and not found, and which documents are downloaded. The result is reports that editors and internal communications can plan with.

Privacy and co-determination

Intranet analytics concerns employees. I measure without a user ID and with shortened IP addresses, and the reports only show content, not people. The legal assessment and the agreement with the works council or staff council are up to you, I provide the technical description for it.

In-house

Intranet data does not belong in someone else’s service. Matomo runs in your data centre or your cloud, with single sign-on if you like.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does Matomo get into SharePoint Online?

Modern SharePoint pages do not allow scripts to be added directly. The tracking code is therefore added through a SharePoint Framework extension (Application Customizer) that loads on every page of a site or the whole tenant.

And in Adobe Experience Manager?

Through the page template or a client library, so that every page carries the code. Area, page type or language can be passed along as custom dimensions.

Are individual employees tracked?

No. Measurement works without a user ID, with shortened IP addresses and without names. The reports show content, areas and search terms, not people.

Can the intranet search be analysed?

Yes. Search terms, searches without results and the pages viewed afterwards show what is missing or hard to find.
